Been Here

Every walk leaves a little more of the world uncovered.

Been Here is a walking exploration journal for iPhone. Start a trip, explore, and uncover your personal map.

Support

Record a walk

Tap Start on the map and allow precise location access. Your walk can keep recording while your iPhone is locked. Pause when you need a break, then Resume or Finish. Finished trips appear in Trips.

Missing or inaccurate GPS

Check that Location Services and Precise Location are enabled for Been Here in iPhone Settings. The app filters location jumps and connects gaps between reliable points. Connections and distance can differ from your actual walk. Open a finished trip to adjust a route connection.

Sync between iPhones

Sign in to the same iCloud account on both devices, enable iCloud for Been Here, and allow time for synchronization. Trips are saved locally while offline. Map appearance settings are separate on each device.

Change the map

Open Settings to choose Dusk, Cloudscape, or Paper Trails, adjust fog opacity and track width, or switch between standard and satellite maps. Track width applies to all your saved trips.

Remove a trip

In Trips, swipe a trip and choose Delete. Its contribution to the explored map disappears, except where another trip overlaps it. The deletion also syncs to your other devices.

Your location and trips

Been Here uses your location to show where you are and, when you start a trip, save your route, dates, active time, and distance. Recording continues in the background until you pause or finish. You can change location permission at any time in iPhone Settings.

Storage and private iCloud sync

Trips and route corrections are stored on your iPhone. When iCloud is available, they also sync through Apple's CloudKit service to a private database in your own iCloud account. A randomly generated installation identifier identifies which device started a trip. Appearance settings stay on this iPhone.

The developer cannot browse your private iCloud trips. Been Here has no advertising, third-party analytics, or developer-operated server for your routes. We do not sell your data or use it for advertising tracking.

Apple services

Apple Maps provides map imagery and location display. Apple processes information needed to provide Maps and iCloud under its own privacy policies. Network access is needed for map loading and synchronization; local trip recording can continue without an internet connection.

Managing your data

Deleting a trip removes it from your history and explored map, including on synced devices. Stored trip records and deletion markers may remain to synchronize that deletion. You can manage the app's iCloud data in iPhone Settings under your Apple Account's iCloud storage controls. Device backups are managed separately by iOS.

Support correspondence

If you contact support, we receive the information you choose to send and use it to respond to your request. Please avoid sending sensitive route or location information unless it is needed to resolve your issue. Support correspondence is retained only as needed to handle the request and meet applicable obligations.

Route accuracy

GPS can be interrupted or inaccurate. Been Here connects gaps between reliable points; these connections are reconstructed rather than direct GPS measurements. It is an exploration journal, not a navigation or safety service.

Policy updates

Changes to data handling will be reflected on this page and in the app's privacy information.
